Shaun McCann is Joint Head of the Litigation Department.

Shaun McCann was born in Scotland in 1961. He received a B.A. in Economics in 1983 and a Ll.B in 1986 from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Shaun McCann was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1986 and spent five years practising at the Bar both in the High Court and Court of Appeal of New Zealand specializing in commercial and insurance litigation, corporate insolvency and asset recovery. In 1991 Shaun McCann moved to London and was admitted as a Solicitor in England. He joined Campbells and was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law of the Cayman Islands in late 1992. In the Cayman Islands Shaun McCann specializes in commercial litigation particularly banking and insurance, as well as insolvency, asset tracing and civil litigation appearing before the Grand Court, Court of Appeal and the Privy Council. Shaun is described in the Chambers Global Guide 2008 as “very talented”. In its 2009 guide, Chambers describes Shaun as “a well-respected figure in the litigation community who is particularly adept at insurance work.”

Chambers 2010 Guide confirms that Shaun is especially visible for on-island work. He is well established and has a solid market reputation.

Ross McDonough is Joint Head of the Litigation Department.

Ross McDonough was born in Scotland in 1962. He graduated with an Ll.B and Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Glasgow before qualifying as a Solicitor in Scotland in 1986 and as a Solicitor in England in 1989. He spent four years in the commercial litigation department of a leading provincial firm of solicitors. In 1992 he joined Wilde Sapte, a leading firm in the City of London and spent over two years in its banking litigation department. He was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands in 1994. Ross specializes in all aspects of commercial litigation with particular emphasis on asset tracing claims, confidentiality matters, liquidations and receiverships, mutual fund and trust litigation, enforcement of foreign judgments. He has appeared as lead Counsel in numerous reported cases before the Grand Court, Court of Appeal and Privy Council. Ross has also been instructed as an expert witness in Cayman Law in a number of proceedings before courts in other jurisdictions and is an active member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals R3, the Insolvency Lawyers Association, COMBAR, the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists and the American Bankruptcy Institute.

The Chambers Global Guide 2007, notes that rivals compliment him as “able to take on anything that is thrown at him,”. He is billed as "a great technician who is rigorous but also practical - he doesn't impose unrealistic solutions on complex cases." Ross is ranked for general litigation and trust litigation. The Chambers Global Guide 2008 adds that Ross has “wealth of experience” across a broad range of areas, including insolvency, asset tracing, and mutual funds and trusts litigation, has earned him a reputation as “an excellent litigator.”

In The Chambers 2009 guide Ross is described as taking on “a broad range of work, including trusts disputes, insolvency and asset tracing. Peers recommend him as “a perennial favourite on the island - he is good at fighting for his clients and is a safe pair of hands with a wealth of experience.””

Ross is listed in the Expert Guides published by the International Financial Law Review as an expert in the area of Insolvency and Restructuring.

Ross is also ranked as “highly recommended” by The Practical Law Company (PLC) in the area of restructuring and insolvency and “recommended” in the area of dispute resolution.

Most recently Ross has been recognized by World Finance (www.worldfinance.com) in its 2009 awards as the best insolvency and restructuring lawyer in the Cayman Islands

In The World Finance Awards for 2010 the firms' Insolvency and Restructuring team has been and named as the best in the Cayman Islands.

Chambers 2010 Guide confirms that Ross is widely regarded as "a great advocate" and a fine rainmaker, and he handles many commercial disputes, insolvencies and trust-related issues.

John Wolf is Head of the Corporate and Commercial Department.

John has a wide range of expertise in corporate and commercial matters with particular emphasis on investment structures and hedge funds. His practice also includes acquisitions, corporate finance and secured lending with particular emphasis on shipping and aircraft acquisitions and financing and corporate reorganizations and restructuring. His clients include:

  • hedge funds, investment managers, administrators and broker dealers
  • major banks and trust companies
  • major listed companies
  • substantial privately held companies
Examples of recent transactions include:
  • establishing Cayman Islands master feeder structures for hedge funds
  • establishing funds of funds
  • major corporate reorganisations with a value in excess of US$3 billion
  • bank restructurings including rescue efforts for distressed banks and re-domiciling of banks to other jurisdictions
  • acquisition, registration, financing, sale and disposal of ships and aircraft
  • major asset finance loans, in particular for ships and aircraft, many in excess of US$30 million
  • lead counsel in the sale of a substantial multi-national business
  • structuring joint venture arrangements including J.V. agreements and constituting documentation
  • advising on and establishing exempted limited partnerships

John has written many papers on corporate and commercial law and has spoken at several conferences including hedge fund conferences and shipping conferences.

Before joining Campbells in 1997, John spent over six years with a major law firm in the city of London practicing in their company and commercial department. He received a LlB (Hons) from Bristol University in 1989 and was admitted as a solicitor in 1992. He was admitted as a Cayman Islands attorney at law in 1997. John is described in the Chambers Global Guide 2008 as “knowledgeable, capable and responsive” and as a funds expert.

John Wolf is praised in Chambers 2009 Guide in the area of investment funds for “his skill and hard work; he has good grasp of the field.” In the area of corporate and finance law John Wolf is dubbed “an approachable and skilled adviser” by interviewees. The Guide also states that “his flexibility and practical approach to complex matters also mark him out from others in the sector.”

Chambers 2010 Guide describes John as demonstrating a wide range across the corporate and funds spectrum.

Alistair Walters is the firm’s Managing Partner.

Alistair Walters qualified as an English solicitor in 1990 and worked in the City of London until 1999 when he left Dibb Lupton Alsop (now DLA Piper), joined Campbells and was admitted as a Cayman Islands attorney at law. Since qualification in 1990, Alistair has been extensively involved in litigation for clients concerning financial, banking and trust matters, asset recovery as well as advising trustees, liquidators and creditors in relation to local and international corporate and investment fund bankruptcies and restructuring.

An area of particular expertise is advising participants in investment funds structures. Clients range from investment managers to administrators, directors, investors, receivers and liquidators. From a litigation perspective, advice generally relates to controversial issues such as drafting/interpretation of fund documentation, decisions to suspend calculation of NAV, restructuring, creation of new classes of shares, creation of side pockets and reserves, valuation problems and both voluntary and compulsory winding up. The advice given is often in conjunction with the firm’s funds department which deals with the non-contentious aspects of such matters.

Alistair also devotes a proportion of his time to advising banking and financial service clients on local and international compliance and regulatory issues including sensitive internal and group matters, investigations and corporate governance.

Alistair is past President of the Cayman Islands Compliance Association (2000 to 2003), a Certified Fraud Examiner, member of the US National Society of Compliance Professionals (NSCP) and Cayman Islands Law Society as well as the Association of Business Recovery Professionals R3. He has written a book and numerous articles on financial fraud and has written widely on local and international money laundering, banking and regulatory issues. He has spoken at local and international conferences on the same areas and chairs the firm’s annual investment funds conference.

Alistair is ranked in The Chambers Global Guide 2007 tables thanks to praise for his “knowledgeable, accessible and responsive” approach to a range of commercial disputes. The Chambers Global Guide 2008 describes him as “personable and capable” and notes that he continues to impress thanks to his experience and knowledge in a range of commercial matters.”

The Chambers 2009 Guide confirms that Alistair is “lauded for the consistently high quality of his arguments and reasoning in court.”

Alistair is listed in the Expert Guides published by the International Financial Law Review as an expert in the area of Insolvency and Restructuring and is recognized by The Practical Law Company (PLC) in the area of dispute resolution.

In January 2010 Alistair was appointed by the Governor of the Cayman Islands as one of the 4 members of the Cayman Islands Human Rights Commission, chaired by former Attorney General Richard Coles and established under the new constitution.

Robert was born and educated in Australia, where he received a Bachelor of Accounting and Bachelor of Laws (LLB). He practiced in Australia with McCullough Robertson with particular emphasis on all areas of corporate finance and investment funds. He also received a Master of Laws (LLM) specialising in Corporate and Finance Law.

Robert moved to London and practiced with well known firm, SJ Berwin as part of their leading fund formation team. SJ Berwin has been named as the World’s Leading Firm for Private Funds Expertise, according to The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers. He was personally involved in a number of significant fund launches for a number of institutional promoters.

In August 2003, Robert was admitted as Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands and specialises in all aspects of investment funds. He has been engaged by large institutions, fund managers, investors, other participants and professional advisers on many varieties of investment funds and special purpose vehicles, along with other matters of corporate law.

Robert speaks at various international conferences and regularly contributes articles to international and Cayman Islands publications. In the Chambers Global Guide 2008 the editors note that Robert is highly praised for his work in funds management, and clients note his “responsiveness and extremely solid grasp of the industry and relevant legal issues.”

The Chambers 2009 Guide, states that Robert Searle is lauded by clients as “an extraordinarily good, attentive attorney with expert drafting skills.”

Chambers 2010 Guide confirms that Robert is viewed as "one of the names for investment funds" and his experience covers Australia and the UK too.

Alan joined Campbells in November 2009. As from 1 April 2010, Alan Craig will be a partner in the firm's Corporate and Commercial Department. Alan received his law degree in 1991 from the University of Glasgow, Scotland (with honours) and was admitted as a Solicitor in Scotland in 1994 (not practising). He was subsequently admitted as an Attorney in the State of New York in 1995 (not practising) and England and Wales in 1997 (not practising). Alan worked with the US investment bank Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette (subsequently acquired by Credit Suisse) in London prior to relocating to the Cayman Islands in 1999, at which time he was admitted to the Cayman Islands bar.

Having worked with the law firm Walkers in the Cayman Islands from August 1999 Alan joined the firm of Turner & Roulstone in January 2004 to head their corporate department; in which capacity he was personally responsible for advising a large number of international financial institutions and corporate clients as well as the supervision of the other attorneys in the group.

Alan has experience in a range of capital markets and securitisation transactions as well of bespoke financing structures. He has also advised a number of US listed Cayman entities and Cayman subsidiaries of major multinationals on the areas of Cayman Islands law applicable to them. Alan has extensive experience in relation to investment fund products, including both hedge funds and private equity investment vehicles, as well as the licensing of financial institutions and investment advisors. Alan is also recognised as having specialist experience in the structuring and licensing of insurance companies.
